Australian clinic allows sex-selection

The Sydney Morning Herald has reported that a Sydney based IVF clinic is offering sex-selection to clients.


IVF sex-selection
The clinic is getting around legal restrictions by using offering treatment to clients at a partner clinic in Thailand. The sex-selection is being termed as "family balancing", and is open to couples who already have a child of one gender and want another child of the opposite gender.


Australian fertility law
Under Australian fertility law guidelines set by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) fertility clinics are not allowed to let clients select the sex of their child or children. The only exception to this is where selection is done for medical reasons.


Fertility clinic & NHMRC
Kylie de Boer the CEO of the clinic involved (Sydney IVF) has stated, "I think the guidelines are due for review and I think the guidelines are wrong." However, Sandra Hacker from the NHMRC countered, "the right to life should not be determined by gender."

Given that some cultures still value males over females and yesterday was International Women's Day, we think the NHMRC are right.
