IVF Regulation in UK
• Clinics must be licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), the HFEA regulates IVF in the UK.• Allows embryo freezing, egg and sperm donation and embryo screening for inherited diseases. UK has recently approved the use of hybrid embryos for medical research.
• Maximum of two embryos created can be implanted in women under 40 with an absolute maximum of three embryos for women over 40. UK is looking at moving to single embryo implantation system.
• No anonymity for donors.
• Limit of 10 children per donor.
• Allows treatment for lesbians and single women as well as married women.
• National Health Plan - treatment available on NHS but usually only one cycle and must meet certain criteria.
