IVF Regulation in Sweden

• Regulated but no private clinics, IVF must be done through University Hospitals.

• Allows embryo freezing, egg and sperm donation and embryo screening for serious inherited diseases.

• Maximum of two embryos created can be implanted in exceptional circumstances.

• Egg sharing not permitted.

• No anonymity for donors (but information limited to details of height, weight, eye, skin and hair colour).

• Maximum of 6 children per donor (but allows additional siblings for coples taking maximum up to 12 in exceptional circumstances).

• Treatment for lesbian couples as well as married women or registered cohabitees (those living together long-term).

• National Health Plan – free if performed at a public hospital but only part of private clinic treatments will be paid.
