Red Clover
(For Women)Red Clover (also known as ‘Trifolium Pratense’) is regarded as one of the best treatments for fertility and is also accepted in medical circles as a valuable plant because it contains isoflavones which mimic the effects of oestrogen the female hormone. It is thought to provide nourishment to the uterus.
Although it is also recommended to boost fertility it is not recommended for women who are actually pregnant or have hormone conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids or uterine or breast cancer.
Its other benefits include combating hot flushes, relieving pre menstrual syndrome (PMS) and helping with breast growth. It can be found in herbal form under a number of names such as Cow Clover, Cow Grass, Meadow Clover, Purple Clover, Trefoil and Wild Clover. Red Clover can also be bought as a ‘tincture’, tea, tablet, capsules or a liquid. Doses vary from person to person but teas and tinctures would require use at least 2-3 times a day over a period of several months.
Red Clover is rich in calcium, chromium, magnesium, niacin, phosphorous, potassium, thiamine and vitamin C. The calcium and magnesium element of Red Clover are thought to relax the nervous system which in turn helps to boost fertility.
Some reported side effects include headaches nausea or rash but for most people no serious side effects occur. However, it can affect the body’s ability to break down some drugs so anyone planning to take this herb should check with their doctor first if they are already taking medication.
It is always best to get advice from a Naturopathic doctor or a herbalist to find the right dosage and combination of herbal remedies to help with your fertility. This guide is provided for information purposes only.
