Dong Quai

(For men and women)
This herb (also known as ‘angelica sinensis’) is best used in conjunction with other herbs recommended for fertility. It works for both men and women. It is part of the celery family and its root is used in medicines and Chinese herbal remedies.

Unlike studies of Red Clover, Dong Quai has not been found to have hormone mimicking effects although it is sometimes referred to as ‘the female gingseng’. Studies have shown that it affects oestrogen and other hormones in animals but its effects on humans is inconclusive.

However, whilst studies have not shown conclusive proof that the herb has hormonal effects it should still be avoided during pregnancy or if you have hormone conditions such as endometriosis, fibroids or uterine or breast cancer.

It is used by men as a remedy to prevent premature ejaculation and is found to be effective if applied to the skin but only as part of a multi-ingredient cream.

The side effects include making the skin extra sensitive to the sun which in turn increases the risk of skin cancer if adequate sun block is not worn.

It can also cause skin inflammation and rashes It can also slow blood clotting and is probably best avoided by people with bleeding disorders and during the menstrual cycle for those with heavy menstrual bleeding.

Dong quai is available in a variety of forms such as tablets, powders, creams and liquid injections. The raw root is also sometimes soaked in wine and then drunk as a remedy.

However, the essential oil of the plant should not be used as it contains small amounts of substances believed to cause cancer.

The herb works best if used well in advance of intentions to conceive because it is thought to relax the central nervous system and the uterus and encourage menstruation in women who have poor cycles.

However because of its risks during pregnancy it should be discontinued after ovulation and only resumed again after the menstrual cycle is ended when pregnancy has definitely not occurred.

It is always best to get advice from a Naturopathic doctor or a herbalist to find the right dosage and combination of herbal remedies to help with your fertility. This guide is provided for information purposes only.
