Testicular Epididymal Sperm Aspiration (TESA)

This procedure is used where there is no sperm in the ejaculation. It is a surgical procedure to obtain sperm from within the testicular tissue and is usually carried out by a urologist under local anaesthetic.

It involves making a small incision into the testicle to remove a sample of testicular tissue to examine it for sperm. Any excess sperm can then be frozen to be used in further IVF treatment at a later date.

The procedure is recommended for men without the sperm carrying tube (Vas Deferens) or who have blocked tubes or have had a vasectomy.
