Most women would donate their eggs

A survey carried out by the Bristol Centre for Reproductive Medicine has found that 71 per cent of women would consider donating their eggs to another women with fertility issues.

Infertile couples
However, more than 50 infertile couples are actually on a waiting list at the Centre, the wait on the list can take two - three years. The Centre carries out 24 egg donation treatments per year and has a 50 per cent success rate for the treatments.

Egg Donations
Egg donations can be used for a number of reasons, such as:

- where the woman has undergone cancer treatment and has had chemotherapy or radiotherapy.

- early onset of menopause

-the woman has a serious genetic disorder that would be passed on to her children if her own eggs were used.

Egg Donors
Woman between 18 - 35 can donate their eggs after having a health check and consultation about the process.

The medical process involves the donor taking hormones to increase egg production prior to extracting the eggs.

The donated eggs are then fertilised in a laboratory with sperm from the egg recipient's own partner. The resulting embryos are then transferred to the recipient's uterus.

A single donation can provide eggs for three women.
