Egg donors to receive flat fee
The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which helps regulate fertility clinics, has stated that it will allow egg donors to be paid a fixed fee of £750 per cycle.UK egg donors
The payment is intended to cover potential loss of earnings, expenses and their gift of eggs. The new amount will mean such donors are among the best compensated in Europe.
Current egg donor compensation
Currently women who donate their eggs can receive a maximum of £250 per cycle for loss of earnings, although they can also claim an unlimited amount in expenses - such as for journeys to clinics and to pay for childminders. This means in practice the average is around £500 in total.
The agreement by the HFEA, whose members met in public in London to decide on the issue, follows a consultation earlier this year. The authority has wanted to increase the effective amount because many women are left out of pocket, and there is a growing shortage of donors.
Egg sharing
Members decided to leave unchanged an agreement allowing 'egg sharing' - that donors can receive fertility treatment for free or at a much reduced price.
