Scottish National Adoption Register

The Scottish Government has given the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) funding to set up a Scottish National Adoption Register. The funding will be for an initial 3 year pilot scheme.

The BAAF has already setup an Adoption Register for England & Wales, which matched 1,390 for adoption since it's launch in 2004.

According to the Children's minister for Scotland Adam Ingram in 2010 there where 15,892 looked after children in Scotland, but only 455 children were actually adopted.

Mr Ingram stated, "The statistics also show that children are becoming looked after for longer periods, creating uncertainty and potential long term social and emotional problems. This underlines the need to increase and speed up adoptions where this is in the best interests of the child.

"The Scottish Government has been looking at how best to increase adoption rates, given the long-term benefits this has for children who can no longer remain with their birth parents."

The new register will launch on March 31st, with local authorities in Scotland asked to refer suitable children to the register. If those children are then not adopted after a period of 3 months in Scotland the register will begin searching nationwide for a suitable adoption match.
