Japanese earthquake orphan adoption

Japanese adoption agencies have been receiving direct emails from people overseas seeking to adopt children orphaned by the recent earthquake and subsequent tsunami.

Tazuru Ogaway, director of the Japanese adoption agency Across Japan stated, "I have been receiving many strange emails, from mostly the US. I honestly tell you such emails make Japanese people very uncomfortable".

Japanese Adoptions
Unlike the Haiti disaster Japan and Japanese society is much better able to cope. That coupled with other factors means that overseas adoption is not really required. Japan has both a dwindling and ageing population. There are also strong family ties, so a child would be readily taken in by members of their extended family.

Martha Osborne of RainbowKids.com stated, “I don’t believe there’s going to be a true orphan situation in Japan in the wake of this disaster. I do not believe that there are going to be children without any ties to relatives…their extended family system is going to consider that child their child.”

Lineage and bloodlines are also very important in Japanese culture, so the idea of adoption is not strong in Japan.
