Fiji to allow intercountry adoption

The Fijian government has confirmed that it is to start working on intercounty adoption agreements.

Govind Sami, Permanent Secretary of the Social Welfare Ministry in Fiji has confirmed they have received enquiries from both Australia and New Zealand regarding adoption.

Currently foreign nationals are unable to adopt Fijian children.


Child Neglect

There has been widespread reporting in the media worldwide of Fijian children living in extreme poverty. With reports of abandonment, neglect and abuse.

This has led to the increase in overseas adoption queries and requests.

According to the ministry there were 1,008 reported cases of child neglect between 1995 and 2009. But given these are reported cases the real figure could be much higher.
