Ethiopia revokes US adoption agency license

An American adoption agency has been accused of child trafficking by the Ethiopian government and had its license revoked.

The Ethiopian Charities and Societies Agency has notified the US adoption agency Better Future Adoption Services that it can no longer operate.

As the agency only provides adoptions from Ethiopia the action could force the agency to close completely.

Legal Action
The agency alleges that the revocation is linked to legal action they are taking against the Ethiopian Ministry of Women's and Children's Affairs, basically it is retaliation for the legal action.

The legal action was originally about the Ministry blocking overseas adoptions.

Adoption Money
Due to the amount of money made by adoptions, (between $20,000 - $25,000 per adoption) there is the real risk of fraud.

The US State Department has issued 4 statements in the past year warning of adoption related fraud in Ethiopia.

Child Trafficking
The US embassy in Addis Ababa has launched an investigation into the entire adoption process in the country due to allegations of child trafficking.

Families in Ethiopia have been tricked into giving up their children for adoption by unscrupulous adoption agents.
