Barack Obama's parents considered adoption?
A new book about Barack Obama, the 44th President alleges that his parents considered giving him up for adoption. The story is told in "The Other Barack: the Bold and Reckless life of President Obama's Father", a biography of the President's father, written by The Boston Globe journalist Sally Jacobs.
The assertion comes from the contents of a memo written in 1961 by an official at the office of the US Immigration Service in Honolulu. This is where Barack Obama senior and the President's mother Ann Dunham lived. They met at the University of Hawaii, where they were both students.
The memo states, "Subject got his USC wife 'Hapai' (Hawaiian for pregnant) and although they were married they do not live together and Ms Dunham is making arrangements with the Salvation Army to give the baby away."
The memo goes on to state that Obama senior had been, "running around with several girls". The authorities also believed that he was already married with a wife in Kenya - which was in fact true - he had a wife and two children in Kenya.
The authorities had considered deporting him on the grounds of polygamy.
However, those that know the family have stated the President's mother would never have considered adoption and the issue was probably raised by his father, possibly to ensure that he was able to stay in the country at the time.
Still it does raise the intriguing notion of what would have happened to him had Barack Obama been adopted.
