Adoption scam couple charged

An Oklahoma City woman has been charged with an adoption scam.

The woman, Serena Mathews and her partner Scott Smith were indicted by a federal grand jury on several counts, including conspiracy and mail fraud.

Mathews is accused by the authorities of posing as a pregnant woman who wished to place her child for adoption. In return she received money for living expenses from several couples who wished to adopt the non-existent child.

Mathews is accused of using 11 aliases over the previous 8 months while defrauding several adoption agencies and law firms. The adoption agencies and law firms were responsible for matching the "birth mother" with potential couples wishing to adopt.

The agencies and law firms apparently sent rent checks directly to her accomplice Smith, who posed as her landlord. Mathews received money for rent, food and utility bills, in all totalling $20,000.
